"Not what I intended at all" Elon Musk's response to OpenAI's transformation from nonprofit to $30billion company.

On February 17th 2023, Elon Musk tweeted " OpenAI was created as an open source (which is why I named it “Open” AI), non-profit company to serve as a counterweight to Google, but now it has become a closed source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft. Not what I intended at all."

OpenAI was co-founded in 2015 by Elon Musk and Sam Altman - as a nonprofit with the goal to develop open source technology "unconstrained by a need to generate financial return". This was the year after Google took over Deepmind and almost certainly a reaction to the concerns that such a powerful technology could end up being controlled by just a few technology companies.

When Musk left in 2018, Sam Altman pivoted OpenAI from a nonprofit to a $30billion company. Just this year Microsoft invested $10billion in OpenAI's chatbot to incorporate it into Bing.
