We lost our incredible terrier cross last week at the fine age of 16 1/4 so this anti ageing startup caught our attention.
Cellular Longevity, branded as Loyal, is a veterinary startup developing therapies to treat the underlying causes of ageing in dogs. By monitoring dogs from an early age, they hope to work out why some dogs are more susceptible to certain diseases and target drugs at what could be a genetic mistake. For example large dogs have much shorter lifespans than smaller dogs, retrievers often have high rates of cancer etc.
Studies carried out show that the lifespan of labradors can be increased by restricting their calorie intake to delay the onset of conditions such as cancer. Knowing labradors, we think restricting their calories is a tough ask.
Loyal have raised $11 million of funding which they will use to start trials on two anti ageing drugs. They hope that by combining therapies and targeting underlying causes they could significantly extend a dogs lifespan.
